Questions
Everything that should not stay ambiguous.
The blank
| Is the blank a finished legal document? | No. It is a starting point. Edit any part of it before you publish. Unfilled places are not defects. |
|---|---|
| Why is the jurisdiction in brackets? | Section 6 of the Basic License leaves the governing law to you. Fill the field on the generate page and it is substituted; leave it and the bracket stays for you to complete afterwards. |
| Can a licence identifier be verified? | No. Nothing is registered anywhere. The identifier is issued in your browser and stored nowhere — it records the configuration, it does not certify anything. |
| What is a configuration number? | The Basic License with four chosen Modules gives 315 possible configurations. Yours is numbered among them, and the number opens the identifier. |
| Can I add clauses of my own? | Yes. The Modules are basic — they close most questions, deliberately not all. |
Decision Making (DM)
| Initiator's Decision (ID) | Before the first Contribution from another Participant is accepted, all decisions are made solely by the Project Initiator. This phase is mandatory and cannot be changed. |
|---|---|
| Subsequent Phase (SP) | After that first Contribution, decisions follow one of two methods: Majority Voting (MV), or Weighted Consensus (WC) — agreement of Participants whose combined Contribution Shares are a majority. |
Commercialization (CM)
| No Commercialization (NC) | Commercial use of the Program is prohibited — selling, licensing, distributing for profit, or using it in commercial products or services. |
|---|---|
| Commercialization Allowed (CA) | Permitted on one of six terms: Proportional to Contribution Shares (PS), Fixed Payments (FP), SESL Commerce (SC), Existing Open-Source License (EL), Custom Commercial License (CL), or Other (OT). |
Intellectual property
| Management (IPM) — who decides | Initiator's Sole Authority (IA), permanently; Initiator's Initial Decision, Participants' Subsequent Decision (IS); or Delegated Decision to Participants (DP) from the start. |
|---|---|
| Protection (IPP) — what applies | Shared Ownership (SO), joint copyright; Individual Ownership (IO), by contribution; Dual Licensing (DL); or Other (OT), which you specify yourself. |
| Dual Licensing names MIT and GPLv3. | Those are examples of ready-made protection, not a closed list. Replace them in your blank with any licence you need — their texts live on the official sites of those licences and are not attached here. |
Choosing
| Two of my choices seem to contradict each other. | That is permitted. Combinations are not validated and no warnings are shown; the choice and its consequences are yours. |
|---|---|
| Can I change a choice after downloading? | Yes — the blank is an ordinary file. Note that its configuration number then no longer matches what is written in it. |
The image
| What is on the blank? | An anthropomorphic depiction of the licence, in the manner of ancient Egypt, where entities and phenomena were drawn as figures whose parts correspond to what they do. |
